Sept. 7, 2016—General Motors settled its last two bellwether cases stemming from a faulty ignition switch linked to 124 deaths and 275 injuries, according to a report by Automotive News.
The settlement came on the night of what would have been the fourth in a series of test trials to help GM and plaintiffs define settlement options in the injury and death lawsuits consolidated in Manhattan federal court, according to the report. The first case was voluntarily dismissed by plaintiffs during the trial and GM was cleared in the next two.
The faulty ignition prompted the recall of 2.6 million vehicles in 2014.
Several additional cases are due to go to trial in mid-2017 and a separate group of cases arising from incidents that took place before 2009 could also move forward, Automotive News reports.
GM has paid close to $2 billion in criminal and civil penalties and settlements in connection with the faulty ignition switch.
