If you stock big rig truck tires and related merchandise for professional drivers, take note that Magellan is entering the commercial transportation navigation market by introducing its RoadMate Commercial 5190T GPS navigator.

The device is designated specifically for over-the-road or local truckers, fleet owners and bus and taxi drivers with pre- loaded maps of the U.S. and Canada.

“The RoadMate Commercial is designed to satisfy the navigation and fleet management needs of the commercial vehicle industry,” reports Sunnie Tsai, director of product marketing.

“Extra-clear to be seen and extra-loud to be heard in the commercial vehicle environment, the Commercial 5190T GPS is packed with truck-specific features and information beneficial to commercial vehicle drivers,” she continues, adding that the unit can “make their job safer, easier and far less stressful. It provides companies and owners with the tools to improve productivity, reduce costs and ultimately increase their profits.”

A large 5-inch color high-definition touchscreen display is easy to read inside a dark truck cab and makes every map detail easy to see, according to Tsai.

“It comes with an extra-clear built-in speaker and wireless Bluetooth technology with an audio level up to 93dB, making it easy to hear voice directions and phone calls (with compatible phones) even inside a noisy 18-wheeler or bus filled with talking passengers,” she says.

It has an IPX-50 dustproof casing and an A/V input to easily connect external devices such as a back-up camera. “The built-in connector and Magellan Fleet Management interface tool kit enables any fleet management solution provider the ability to offer the complete customer solution,” says Tsai.

The system has commercial vehicle customized routing, multi-stop planning and route optimization capabilities to help save time and money while improving the return-on-investment, she says.

A Multiple Driver Login function is also available. Hours of service and driving status for multiple drivers can be logged, tracking hours and mileage for fuel records. Logs can be conveniently exported for compliance reporting.

Tsai says it includes free Lifetime Traffic Alerts with real-time traffic information to help drivers avoid tie-ups due to accidents, detours, construction zones and other delays. “The Highway Lane Assist feature shows realistic highway signs that guide drivers, providing critical advanced warning to help them choose the correct lane when approaching an interchange or exit.”

The unit also has the company’s exclusive OneTouch user interface, Smart Detour, either 2D or 3D viewing, automatic re- routing, an information dashboard, more than 6 million points of interest as well as highway exits plus a truck stop directory with amenities listed for each location.

Calling it “a key part of today’s most useful and cost-efficient fleet navigation and monitoring solutions,” Stig Pedersen, associate vice president of product management, notes that “with this device, drivers and dispatchers work together to improve customer satisfaction and optimize fleet resources to achieve lower costs and higher profits.”

It has a suggested retail price of $379.99 and will be available this spring. The device comes with a cradle, cradle mount adapter plate and screws, windshield mount, vehicle power adapter, USB cable and quick-start guide.
