Bob Katz, owner of Nu-Tread Tire in East Boston, Mass., was recently quoted in the Boston Herald about the prohibitive costs of health insurance. Katz was among a handful of select businesspeople who had been invited by Gov. Deval Patrick to participate in an official discussion regarding the issue.
Katz told Patrick that Nu-Tread has incurred annual premium increases in excess of 20 percent over the past few years, and that the constantly rising rates are “simply unsustainable” for him and other business owners.
Several features of the healthcare legislation passed in Massachusetts under former governor and presidential candidate Mitt Romney – including the mandatory purchase of health insurance by all Bay State residents – have been included in the national reform measure recently approved by Congress and signed into law by President Barack Obama.
In 2000, Nu-Tread was honored by the East Boston Chamber of Commerce as its “Business of the Year” based on the company’s 60 years of service to the community. The family owned operation belongs to the American Car Care Centers chain. Katz is also board member at the Tire Industry Association (TIA).
