Canadian Tire is receiving accolades for its Rewards for Recycling program, which allows people to drop off unwanted air conditioners, dehumidifiers and halogen lamps for proper disposal.
A $25 gift card is given to those turning in an air conditioner or dehumidifier, while the halogen lamps net a $10 certificate.
The endeavor, which runs through Oct. 25, is operated in cooperation with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA). Last year nearly 30,000 discarded appliances were collected at more than 200 Canadian Tire outlets throughout the province.
“We are always looking for ways in which to provide our customers with eco-friendly products and services and are pleased to reward Ontario customers for their own environmental efforts,” says Reg McLay, the chain’s senior vice president of marketing and business development.
“We are fortunate to have partners such as Canadian Tire, which recognize the importance of conservation and energy efficiency,” notes Paul Shervill, vice president of conservation at the OPA.
“The lifetime energy saving generated from this campaign – approximately 141 million kilowatt-hours – represents enough electricity to power a city the size of Stratford, Ontario for an entire year,” he adds. “Efforts like this will help Ontario continue to develop its culture of conservation.”
