Come ye and gather ‘round the (drag strip) Christmas tree: The new Proxes TQ is Toyo’s first DOT-approved drag racing radial tire to go into production. It was recently unveiled in front of a crowd of speed enthusiasts at the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Trade Show in Orlando, Fla.
Designed specifically for high-horsepower muscle cars and street machines, the tire “delivers maximized grip during launch for quicker 60-foot times and lower elapsed times,” company executives report.
They say a new drag racing-specific radial tread compound, strengthened radial construction and optimized tread design “work together to provide superior grip, straight-line performance and high-speed stability down the track yet low noise on the drive home.”
The dual-purpose low-void asymmetric tread design of includes a semi-slick inner area to improve traction on independent rear suspension vehicles while still maintaining consistent grip on straight-axle, rear suspension vehicles.
A variable pitch outer area on the tread reduces pattern noise while driving to and from the local drag strip while optimized construction with a special “drag radial carcass works to maintain a large, consistent contact patch for increased traction throughout the course of a drag run,” according to the company.
“In addition to delivering maximum performance at the track, the unique tread and attractive sidewall…will add to the appearance of any muscle car or street machine.”
Current sizes include P255/50R16, P275/45R16, P275/40R17, P315/35R17, P345/40R17 and P315/35R18.
