EPA rep to speak about 6H rule at CIC meeting

March 11, 2011

March 11, 2011 — Deborah Craig, an environmental scientist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), will give a presentation on the new paint stripping and surface coating rules at the Collision Industry Conference (CIC) meeting later this month, organizers announced Friday.

Formally known as the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NASHAP) 6H rule, the regulations place tighter restrictions on shop equipment, practices and training. Friday is the deadline for shops to notify the EPA of compliance with the rule, aimed at reducing air pollutants, specifically methylene chloride, cadmium, lead, manganese and nickel.

“Even with a March 11, 2011 final deadline for compliance there is still some confusion in the industry on the 6H Rule,” said Stephen Regan, the CIC’s Governmental Committee co-chairman, “and Ms. Craig's presentation is designed to ensure all repairers and others in the industry have accurate and official information as we enter into the phase of compliance and oversight.”

The CIC meeting will also feature a forum on industry repair standards and the CIC’s Repair Standards Advisory Committee will deliver a business case for the development of an independent standards body proposed last July.

The CIC meeting is scheduled for March 17 in conjunction with the NORTHEAST Tradeshow at the Crown Plaza Meadowlands in Newark, N.J.
