CAPA issues first quality watch report

Nov. 2, 2011

Nov. 2, 2011— In order to illustrate the benefits of Certified Automotive Parts Association Certification, CAPA created the CAPA Quality Watch (CQW).  Results of CAPA Quality Watch Report 1 show how critically important it is for repairers and insurers to look for certified parts.

As part of its job as an independent, nonprofit crash parts certification program, it studied 15 popular non-CAPA Certified aftermarket parts. It found that about 75 to 80 percent of CAPA certifiable parts used by collision repair shops aren’t CAPA certified.

“The bottom line: nearly 90 percent, (13 of 15) parts, exhibited significant differences and most contained serious deficiencies, when compared to car company brand parts,” said Jack Gillis, CAPA’s executive director. “What is particularly problematic for both insurers and collision repairers is that many of these non-CAPA Certified aftermarket parts look just like the car company brand part.”

Compliance with CAPA standards is voluntary and most parts used by collision repair shops haven’t been submitted for certification.

The report is available to the public for free via its website. CAPA plans to issue quality watch reports on a regular basis.
