Ford report touts emissions reductions, improved fuel economy and safety

June 15, 2011 — Ford on Wednesday release_notesd its 12th annual sustainability report, which highlighted improved fuel economy and safety, reductions in pollution and efforts to consume less water.

Named “Blueprint for Sustainability: Driving Change,” the report offered updates on the company’s progress in key areas of operations, as well as product enhancements related to vehicle safety, and societal concerns, such as water use and management of the supply chain. The report also covered areas Ford has deemed critical moving forward.

“The Blueprint for Sustainability encompasses a wide range of efforts at Ford to provide sustainable transportation around the world," said Sue Cischke, Ford group vice president for sustainability, environment and safety engineering. “Ford is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its products and facilities, supporting positive social change and ensuring economic viability for long-term growth.”

Some highlights:

- Ford reduced its carbon dioxide emissions from global operations by 5.6 percent on a per-vehicle basis compared to 2009 and set a goal to drop emissions 30 percent by 2025.

- Water consumption was included as a concern for the first time in this report. Ford has reduced water use by 49 percent per vehicle since 2000. In 2011, the company aims to cut back on water consumption by another 5 percent per vehicle.

- Ford has invested billions into the development of fuel-efficient vehicles and now offers 12 with best-in-class economy and four that achieve at least 40 mpg.

- The 2011 Fiesta was the first vehicle in its class to achieve an Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick and the 2012 Focus also earned the designation.
