AAA launches Phase II of electric vehicle initiative

Sept. 28, 2011

Sept. 28, 2011—AAA on Tuesday launched the second phase of its electric vehicle initiative with the installation of a charging station at the organization’s national office in Heathrow, Fla.

The station is a Level II, 240 volt unit that will allow electric vehicle owners to top off their vehicle's charge. The station can accommodate two cars simultaneously. Access to the charging station is free, and available 24 hours a day to both AAA members and the general public, according to AAA.

"AAA has been a leader in addressing the needs of motorists for more than a century, and the installation of a charging station at our national office continues that tradition," said Marshall Doney, automotive vice president for AAA. "We are proud to support the burgeoning electric vehicle industry and alleviate some 'range anxiety,' first on the roadside and now at our headquarters office."

AAA announced the first phase of its electric vehicle initiative at the Plug-In 2011 Conference & Exposition in July. The organization unveiled a mobile electric vehicle charging truck with the capability to provide roadside rescue charging. The program's rollout in six U.S. metropolitan cities is currently underway, according to AAA.
