Connected Cars to Become Standard by 2020

June 21, 2013

June 21, 2013—Ninety percent of vehicles will have built-in Internet connectivity by 2020, according to a new connected car report from telecommunications company Telefonica Digital.

Currently, roughly 10 percent of vehicles are equipped with Internet connectivity.

The report also predicts that Internet connectivity will become a requirement for vehicles, rather than an optional add-on.

According to the report, the increase in connected cars could also mean more proactive maintenance; connected cars may be able to alert customers or service personnel to vehicle issues, provide more information about what’s wrong with the vehicle, and complete software fixes through the Internet.
