3M Expands Cutting and Grinding Technology

July 21, 2014—3M’s Automotive Aftermarket Division on July 18 announced the expanded use of its Cubitron II material, an abrasive with precision-shaped grains that form sharp peaks as they wear to slice through paint and filler.

The technology was first introduced in sanding discs, but is now applied to a full line of products for heavy metalworking, like roloc and fibre discs, cut-off wheels and file belts.

The Cubitron II has a triangular-shaped ceramic grain that works twice as fast, wears evenly, has double the lifespan of traditional abrasives and leaves a consistent finish, 3M said in a press release.

“When the cycle time is critical, it pays to quickly and efficiently dis-assemble the vehicle for accurate estimates, parts ordering and repair planning,” Marlyn Nelson, U.S. marketing manager, for abrasives  at 3M’s Automotive Aftermarket Division said. “With the full line of 3M Cubitron II abrasive products, the repair professional has the most efficient cutting and grinding tools at their fingertips, which saves them time and money on the process.”

3M offers four products with the Cubitron II technology: 

  • 3M Cubitron II Fibre Roloc Discs:  Designed for weld grinding and paint removal.
  • 3M Cubitron II Abrasive Fibre Discs: For door skin removal, paint stripping and weld grinding.
  • 3M Cubitron II Cut-Off Wheel: For panel cutting and sectioning jobs.
  • 3M Cubitron II File Belt: For spot weld removal and MIG weld finishing.
