According to the Q4 Mitchell Industry Trends Report, the number of parts on the average estimate increases during the more mild, early winter months—usually by more than 1.5 parts per estimate for a total parts spend increase of $100—before leveling off in the later winter months, when snowfall is generally heavier. Mitchell said that it associates these increases as a proxy for the increase in accident speed, which requires more parts, labor and paint than on the average estimate. And while it may seem counterintuitive that heavier snowfalls reduce accident severity, Mitchell said that accidents during early winter snowfalls and sleet are generally more severe, thus also increasing parts use.
