June 3, 2013—Annual sales of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) is expected to surpass two million by 2030, according to a new report from research firm Navigant Research.
In 2011 and 2012, annual deliveries of FCVs were still well under 500 vehicles.
“Fuel cell vehicles have demonstrated the performance characteristics needed for commercial sales, and manufacturers will continue to improve and optimize the technology,” says Lisa Jerram, senior research analyst for Navigant Research. “Fundamentally, FCV technology can provide sufficient range—well over 200 miles on a single tank—and can be integrated into larger vehicle models more effectively than plug-in electric vehicle technology.”
The report also outlines the biggest challenges leading up to commercialization, including bring down system and manufacturing costs to reach sufficient volume.
