Alcoa Expands 3-D Printing Capabilities

Sept. 8, 2015—Alcoa is expanding its research and development center in Pennsylvania to accelerate the development of its advanced 3-D–printing materials processes, including the production of specifically produced aluminum powders.

The $60 million expansion is under construction at the Alcoa Technical Center near Pittsburgh, the world’s largest light metals research center.

Alcoa’s material scientists will produce proprietary aluminum, titanium and nickel powders designed specifically for 3-D printing. These powders will produce higher-strength 3-D–printed parts while meeting other quality and performance requirements.

“Alcoa is investing in the next generation of 3-D printing for aerospace and beyond,” said Klaus Kleinfeld, Alcoa chairman and CEO. “Combining our expertise in metal alloys, manufacturing, design and product qualification, we will push beyond the limits of today’s additive manufacturing. This investment strengthens our leadership position in meeting fast-growing demand for aerospace components made using additive technologies.”
