A community college in North Carolina raised $38,000 by auctioning off a vehicle restored by automotive students, the Mountaineer reports.
Mechanical and collision repair students from the automotive program at Haywood Community College (HCC) in Clyde, North Carolina, restored a 1957 Chevy Bel Air, which was then put up for a two-week statewide auction online. Several bids came in toward the end, the final selling price climbing to $38,000.
HCC’s automotive program manager, Daryl Honeycutt, said that the result far exceeded his or the students’ expectations. The money earned from the sale will be used for continuing the vehicle restoration project by purchasing another project car and needed parts. The 1957 Bel Air was the first of what Honeycutt hopes will be an annual event.
“If everything goes as planned, we would like to make this an ongoing process and have a car that HCC students build to auction off at every annual HCC car show,” Honeycutt said. “This will enable the instructors to have more and different types of hands-on experience in the labs for their students in class.”
