WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a 30-day “comment period” for the public to voice opinions on the EPA’s suggested fine particle standards. On August 19 and 20, the EPA designated areas as “attainment” or “nonattainment” for fine particle pollution and notified states.

The EPA has labeled areas nonattainment because selected pollutants exceed federal standards. The EPA aims to decrease the harm caused by exposure to fine particle pollution, which is linked to breathing problems, heart attacks and premature death.

States and tribes will have the opportunity for 30 days to comment. Following, a notice will be published in the Federal Register announcing that the EPA will accept public comments for 30 days. A final designation is due by Dec. 18, 2008, and both state and public comments will be taken into consideration.
