A San Francisco television station featured a news segment on the Collision Repair Association of California (CRA)-sponsored SB 1059 during a recent newscast. The feature included an interview with CRA member Laura Bertolli of Bertolli’s Auto Body Shop of San Rafael.

Bertolli and past customers explained how they had to fight an insurer that wanted to install an aftermarket radiator on a new vehicle in need of collision repairs. Bertolli won the dispute, but she’d prefer that mandates of SB 1059 be in force.

The proposed law would only allow the use of aftermarket parts to replace key factory parts (radiator, air conditioner, condenser, etc.) under warranty if the requirement were in the insurance policy.

The CRA is trying to get insurers to disclose coverage for factory parts when the policy is offered to consumers.

“We’re not against aftermarket parts, only hidden terms and conditions that surprise our customers when repairs are needed,” says Gene Crozat, CRA president.
