The Collision Repair Association of California (CRA) is urging members and their families to e-mail letters of support for SB 1059 today. E-mails must be received by noon Thursday, April 10. Send letters of support to the consultant analyzing the bill: [email protected].

The State Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on SB 1059 at 1 p.m. April 15 in Room 112 of the State Capitol.

SB 1059 would stop insurers from requiring the installation of aftermarket parts in place of OEM parts under warranty. The bill applies to vehicles during a period of three years from the date of original sale as a new vehicle. The parts covered are those affecting the engine, the heating and cooling system, the air conditioning system and corrosion protection (sheet metal). The bill would not apply to claimants who have a policy that requires use of aftermarket parts.

The bill was approved, 6-3, by the Senate Banking, Finance and Insurance Committee last week. The bill is opposed by insurers and aftermarket companies, including CAPA. It is supported by the California Motor Car Dealers Association, the California Autobody Association, Consumers For Auto Safety and Reliability and the California Peace Officers Association.

A letter of support should identify yourself and your business and can be as simple as this: “I support SB 1059 because it protects my customers from insurance policies that might harm their vehicle warranty.”
