Shop workers save pedestrian pinned under vehicle

April 11, 2011—A pedestrian pinned under a 2010 Hyundai Tucson was rescued Saturday by employees at Warwick Auto Body, according to the Times Herald-Record based in Middletown, N.Y.

Employees at Warwick Auto Body in Warwick, R.I. saw Inelda Portugal, 38, get hit by the vehicle. The shop employees used a jack to get the vehicle off her body, police Sgt. Edward Mullins told the Times Herald-Record.

“I’m thanking God Warwick Auto Body was in today,” Mullins told the Times Herald-Record. The shop is typically open just on weekdays.

The driver, a 17-year-old female Warwick resident, went through an intersection and struck Portugal in a crosswalk, police told the Times Herald-Record. The SUV’s high center of gravity, rather than the driver’s speed, pushed Portugal under the vehicle.

Police didn’t ticket the driver. Portugal was treated for head injuries at St. Anthony Community Hospital and release_notesd, according to the Times Herald-Record.

Warwick Auto Body was featured in FenderBender magazine in December for its innovative communications plan.
