Senate Bill Seeks to Reduce Vehicle Emissions Inspections

Feb. 13, 2013—Pennsylvania Sen. Elder Vogel recently introduced Senate Bill 332, which seeks to reduce the number of emissions inspections for vehicles.
The bill has a number of provisions, including that newest model year vehicles would be exempt from emissions inspection requirements for 10 years from the date of registration, alternative fuel vehicles would be exempt from emissions inspection requirements, and the newest 10 model years and alternative-fuel vehicles would be subject to anti-tampering inspections for the presence of emissions control components.
The Automotive Service Association (ASA) has expressed opposition to the 10-year emissions inspection exemption and the exemption of alternative fuel vehicles. The ASA has urged local independent repairers to send letters of opposition to their state senator.
