GEICO, DRIVE SMART Virginia to conduct teen distracted driving contest

Feb. 22, 2012

Feb. 22, 2012—GEICO on Wednesday announced a partnership with DRIVE SMART Virginia to launch a month-long contest in March focused on preventing distracted driving among teens in the state of Virginia.

The Distracted Driving Pledge Contest, which will kick-off March 1, will be conducted in 12 Virginia high schools. GEICO said students at the participating schools will pledge to not use cell phones, eat or drink while driving, and to focus on driving habits rather than their passengers.

The school with the highest percentage of student pledges will be rewarded with a GEICO-sponsored party in April, which is National Distracted Driving Awareness month, according to GEICO. The winning high school will be notified in April, and will be announced to the community through Facebook and Twitter.

The following Virginia high schools will participate in the contest: Booker T. Washington High School, Denbigh High School, Granby High School, Green Run High School, Indian River High School, Kellam High School, Lake Taylor High School, Landstown High School, Ocean Lakes High School, Princess Anne High School, Renaissance Academy, and Salem High School.

“Unfortunately, teen drivers are more likely than any other age group to be involved in a fatal distraction-related crash,” said Joe Thomas, regional vice president of GEICO. “GEICO is proud to be partnering with these organizations to take a stand against distracted driving during the next few months and beyond.”
