June 13, 2016—General Motors announced Friday that it will expand its Canadian engineering base at its Oshawa Tech Centre to focus on the development of shared, autonomous and connected cars.
GM will expand the engineering base to reach a total of approximately 1,000 positions at the facility over the next few years. This will exceed the capacity of the Oshawa Tech Centre, prompting GM to soon open a center in Markham Ontario.
“We selected Canada for this expansion because of its clear capacity for innovation, proven talent and strong ecosystem of great universities, startups and innovative suppliers. With this expansion, GM Canada will play an important role in our evolution toward vehicles that are connected, autonomous, shared and electric,” said Mark Reuss, GM executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain.
This is the latest development in GM’s plan for autonomous cars and ride-hailing after its investment in Lyft and acquisition of Cruise Automation.
