March 1, 2019—David Harkey, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) issued a statement on the GHSA pedestrian fatalities report.
"The alarming report from the Governors Highway Safety Association on pedestrian deaths demonstrates the urgent need to redouble our efforts to implement countermeasures that work," Harkey noted.
"Pedestrian crashes are becoming more frequent and deadlier," he added. "They are happening primarily in urban and suburban areas, on busy roads with fast-moving traffic, away from intersections and in the dark. Improvements in road design, vehicle design and lighting, crash prevention technology and speed limit enforcement all have a role to play in making streets safer for pedestrians. We know what will work to solve this problem."
