Toyota, Lexus to Have Standard AEB by End of 2017

March 22, 2016

March 22, 2016—Toyota announced Monday that the company plans to make automatic emergency braking standard on nearly every Toyota and Lexus model and trim level by the end of 2017.

This comes after, last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) announced that 20 automakers committed to standard AEB by 2022. Toyota’s announcement puts it four years ahead.

“At Toyota, we are committed to creating better ways to move for everyone,” said Jim Lentz, chief executive officer of Toyota Motor North America. “High-level driver assist technologies can do more than help protect people in the event of a crash; they can help prevent some crashes from ever happening in the first place. We are proud to help lead this industry in standardizing these systems and bring automated braking to our customers sooner rather than later.”

Twenty-five out of 30 models will include Lexus Safety System + or Toyota Safety Sense, which include technologies such as Toyota’s Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, and Automatic High Beams.
