March 27, 2014—Ford has selected 3M’s Panel Bonding Adhesive PN08115 and its File Belt Sander as approved products for repairing the new Ford F-150 aluminum cab pickup.
The high-strength aluminum panels used in the 2015 F-150 will require new repair methods. Ford has issued already begun the process of approving certain tools and equipment for use in this repair process.
The Panel Bonding Adhesive PN08115 and File Belt Sander are the latest.
The 3M Automotive Aftermarket Division worked closely with engineers from the Ford Paint and Body Technical Center on solutions for manufacturing the new truck and to “help make sure collision repairers would have the right tools and materials in place before the vehicle even launched,” 3M said in a release.
"In order to make sure that repairs to the new truck were straight forward and reasonable for mainstream collision repair facilities, Ford engineers worked with collision industry leaders, including 3M, during the development of the Workshop Manual,” said Jason Scharton, 3M’s business development manager for OEM/collision repair.
The bonding adhesive is a two-part epoxy adhesive that can work with a wide variety of plastic and metal substrates, and can be used on door skins, quarter panels and box sides.
The File Belt Sander can be used for grinding out self-piercing rivets, removing seam sealer and preparing surfaces for rivet-bonded repairs.
