Aug. 22, 2013—Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. is showcasing two new safety technologies in Nissan Leaf vehicles.
Laser scanners and cameras monitor a 360-degree circle around the vehicle, continually looking for safety hazards such as other vehicles, road signs and signals.
The second technology enables the car to react to the data collected by the sensors. According to Nissan, the pairing of these technologies enables the car to handle complex real-world road situations such as sensing when a lane is closed on the highway due to road work, turning to avoid oncoming traffic and detecting a parked car on the side of the road, and then helping the car to steer around the obstacle safely.
The innovations being demonstrated at Nissan 360 come from Nissan's research and development branch with the long term aim to create "collision-free cars" and autonomous driving.
