Dec. 5, 2011—Honda Motor Co. Inc. recently expanded its airbag inflator recall in certain 2001 through 2003 Honda and Acura vehicles to include 273,000 additional vehicles sold in the U.S.
Honda said airbag inflators in the recalled vehicles might deploy with too much pressure. That can cause the inflator casing to rupture, which could result in injury or fatality to vehicle occupants.
Honda’s expanded recall now includes the following vehicle models: 2001-2002 Honda Accord, 2001-2003 Honda Civic, 2001-2003 Honda Odyssey, 2002-2003 Honda CR-V, 2003 Honda Pilot, 2002-2003 Acura 3.2 TL and 2003 Acura 3.2 CL.
Honda also said that roughly 640 effected drivers’ airbag service parts were sold for installation in vehicles for collision repair or other vehicle service. Honda is unable to determine the specific vehicles that may have received the affected service parts through existing information, so the company said it will inspect 603,000 additional vehicles and replace those parts as necessary.
Honda said owners of the affected vehicles will be notified of the recall by mail in late December. Owners are also able to determine if their vehicles require repair by visiting recalls.honda.com or recalls.acura.com.
