Hyundai to Open First U.S. Auto Parts Plant

Aug. 26, 2013

Aug. 26, 2013—After struggling through recent Korean labor strikes, the Hyundai Motor Group plans to break ground on a new $35 million auto parts plant in Georgia in October.

According to a report from the GlobalPost, Hyundai Dymos Inc., which makes transmissions and seats for passenger cars, plans to hire about 350 Americans at its first U.S. plant.

Hyundai workers launched a partial strike on Aug. 20 that lasted two days, costing the carmaker millions in lost production.

On Friday, Hyundai's 46,000 union workers staged another partial strike, a day after their leaders failed to work out differences with the management over the latest wage dispute. There has been at least one worker strike every year since 1986 except for in 1994 and from 2009–11.
