July 20, 2018—Despite layoffs to self-driving operators last week, Uber said it plans to have its autonomous vehicles back on Pittsburgh's roads this summer, reported WESA 90.5.

An Uber spokesperson said the 110 layoffs were made to help with self-driving testing and development, according to the report. The eliminated positions are going to be replaced with 55 new, more technical ones. The same people will operate the cars on both public roads and test tracks when previously these were two separate teams.

The change is in the hopes of finding technical experts who can provide more comprehensive feedback on the technology.

Uber suspended testing after a self-driving Uber struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Ariz., earlier this year.
