July 11, 2018—The Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office has filed charges against 14 people in connection with an auto insurance scam, reported Miami Patch. Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said the scheme involved insurance claims for phony auto repairs totaling some $530,000 in less than half a year. The defendants are facing charges of racketeering and related offenses.
According to ABC 10 News, the accidents never took place and the repairs on the cars were never made.
One of the alleged ringleaders went before a judge Tuesday on accusations that he led a scheme to defraud Geico insurance out of more than $500,000.
14 people were charged in connection with the fraud, including Geico insurance adjusters, reported ABC 10 News.About $530,000 were stolen over five to six months.
