Enhancing shop efficiency with advanced abrasive materials and dust-free systems
Abrasives are not new, but there are new advancements in their materials and technology. In the quest to improve the technician’s day-to-day work experience and increase shop efficiency, new developments in abrasives have been put to the test, and the results found that basic changes can make a big difference.
Take, for instance, the material that makes up the tools that are used daily. One of the most significant advancements in abrasives in the last couple years is film-backed abrasives with precision grain technology. The difference is noticeable, providing a more uniform and consistent sanding surface, which is especially helpful when blending and featheredging. Reducing the wear on the edges is a plus, as it extends the product's lifespan, saving money on materials.
Advancements in abrasives help collision repair shops reduce waste and save money. The best abrasive choice for durability and performance is film-backed. Paper-backed abrasives are prone to fraying and becoming misshapen when in use. An abrasive with a film back better resists wear, leading to longer product life and less material waste, which is helpful for a body shop trying to get the most efficiency out of their supplies.
Another “simple” development that makes a big impact is holes. Dust-free, vacuum-equipped sanding systems capture dust effectively when paired with sandpaper designed with multiple holes. Besides the obvious benefit of keeping the shop cleaner, dust-free systems also improve repair quality, which benefits a technician’s health.
By reducing a technician's exposure to dust, respiratory issues are reduced, creating a healthier work environment. Plus, dust-free systems minimize the airborne particles created during a repair. The end result will be a better finish, cleaner repair, and less rework.
Along with having cleaner panels and work surfaces, which improve finish quality, dust-free designs also improve the shop’s air and reduce everyone’s exposure to dust. Both issues are addressed while not requiring additional equipment or setup.
Both film-backed abrasives and dust-free systems are newer trends that will not only improve the quality and durability of the repair but also make it easier to have a safer, more efficient workplace.
