May 12, 2015—The primary reason that Americans want self-driving cars is because of lower insurance costs, according to a new report from the Boston Group.
In a survey of 1,500 U.S. drivers, 55 percent said they were either “likely” or “very likely” to buy a semi-autonomous car and 44 percent said they would buy a fully autonomous vehicle in the next 10 years.
Semi- and fully autonomous features including blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and collision avoidance will lead to fewer crashes which will reduce the cost for insurers. Because of this, a large number of insurance companies are exploring discounts for these vehicles making them more appealing to consumers.
Reasons for not wanting an autonomous vehicle include distrust of technology, fear of hacking and love of driving.
