March 25, 2015—General Motors said on Wednesday that numerous features on the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado were designed to reduce collision repair costs, according to a report on the automaker's website.
Edmunds reported that the Silverado's front fenders are structural pieces, which allows technicians to simply replace a damaged fender. Roof panels also feature a similar design.
GM said that the main front frame rails are designed so that, depending on the severity of the damage, it is possible for technicians to cut away the damaged section and replace it with a new unit, rather than replacing the entire chassis or totaling the vehicle.
“When we design trucks, we don’t only consider what features our consumers demand from a full-size truck,” says Mark Szlachta, a GM serviceability design engineer. “We also approach the process with our technician hat on, ensuring we engineer a truck that is straightforward and cost-effective to repair.”
