Apple Introduces CarPlay Technology

March 5, 2014

March 5, 2014—An automotive version of Apple's mobile operating system, CarPlay, will debut in Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo vehicles this week, Apple announced Monday.

Apple said the feature will allow users to access functions of their iPhones on the vehicles’ infotainment screens.

CarPlay connects an iPhone 5 or later model to the vehicle, which allows drivers to make calls, use maps, listen to music and access text messages through a touch-screen console.

Apple said Honda, BMW, Ford, General Motors, Nissan and Toyota are also expected to integrate CarPlay into their vehicle designs.

Vehicles with CarPlay are expected to start shipping later this year.
