October 4, 2010—In its October Car Care Month recommendations, AAA says oil should be changed every 5,000-7,000 miles, not every 3,000 as many consumers believe.
Although 3,000 miles used to be the norm, late-model vehicles are made to use oil more efficiently. This change saves consumers money and helps the environment, the two key components to AAA’s car care month recommendations.
"Knowing what and when maintenance needs to be performed keeps consumers from over- or under-maintaining their vehicle," said John Nielsen, director of AAA Auto Repair and Buying Programs. "It also cuts down on the over-use of environmentally sensitive products such as motor oil, aids in the conservation of gasoline and can prolong the overall life of a car."
Tire rotations and inflation is key to reaching optimum miles per gallon. Owners should check their tires, including the spare, once a month and check their owners manual for their correct pressure levels, according to AAA. Reading and knowing the owner’s manual can save time and money in the long run.
