College of Lake County (Ill.) Expands Collision Repair Program

Feb. 6, 2015

Feb. 6, 2015—The College of Lake County, Gray’s Lake Campus, has completed the renovation of its $1.6 million auto body shop for the school’s automotive collision repair program.

Octavio Cavazos, the department chair for the schools automotive collision repair program, was recognized with a 2014 FenderBender Award in part for his efforts in helping to push this initiative forward.

According to a report from The Chicago Tribune, the shop includes an integrated welding room, vehicle exhaust systems, paint booths and a Chief frame machine, along with three classrooms, an office, and a student lounge.

The 10,000-square-foot building for the shop formerly housed the school’s automotive technology program, which stopped being offered at the school in 2005.

Previously, the program only offered evening courses at the leased Lake County High Schools Technology Campus, which used the facilities during the day. With the recent renovations, the school is able to hold classes during the day. There are currently 15 students enrolled in this semester’s program. Over 50 students are expected to enroll in the program in its fall 2015 semester.
