Aug. 27, 2015—Mazda, Acura and Mercedes models earned a “superior” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in collision prevention tests, according to an IIHS release.
The IIHS rates vehicles as “basic,” “advanced” or “superior” depending on how they perform in tests at 12 mph and 25 mph. The vehicles tested are equipped with collision warning or automatic braking systems, which prevent a collision without driver intervention.
In order to achieve a “superior” rating vehicles must feature a collision warning system and have an ability to brake at low speeds and speeds as high as 25 mph.
The Mercedes-Benz C class, E class and CLA achieved the superior rating. Mercedes is the first automaker to offer a standard front crash prevention system that earned a “superior” rating from IIHS. The prevention system is standard feature on the 2015 C class, E class and CLA.
All four Acura models (the MDX, RLX, ILX and RDX) earned a “superior” rating.
The Mazda CX-5 and Mazda6 both earned “superior” ratings proving luxury vehicles are not the only ones with advanced automatic braking.
