Allstate, police award safe California drivers with free gas

Dec. 21, 2011

Dec. 21, 2011—Police traffic officers in Fresno, Calif., are rewarding the city’s drivers Wednesday with $10,000 worth of free fuel for ranking as the California city with the lowest auto collision frequency in the 2011 Allstate America's Best Drivers Report.

Drivers in Fresno, Calif., average 9.9 years between collisions, according to Allstate. Fresno Police Traffic Bureau Commander Capt. Andrew Hall said the city’s number of fatal traffic collisions have decreased by 47 percent over the last eight years. Traffic citations issued also reduced during that time.

Fresno police traffic officers will give a $50 gas card to drivers exhibiting safe driving techniques. Allstate said police officers will gesture for the safe driver to pull over in order to award them with the fuel card. Behaviors police officers are looking for include: completing full stops at red lights before turning right, using turn signals appropriately, proper use of seat belts and child safety seats, having two hands on the steering wheel and using rear view mirrors appropriately.

Allstate said the gas cards, which were donated by the company, will be exhausted after 200 drivers are awarded.

"Many drivers in Fresno are doing their part toward keeping America's roadways safer," said Phil Telgenhoff, field vice president of Allstate in California. "We salute drivers there who make the community a safer place to live, work and raise families."
