Sept. 4, 2013—Recently announced expansions by aluminum producer Alcoa and parts manufacturer Calsonic Kansei North America to their respective Tennessee facilities will create 1,400 combined new jobs.
Calsonic Kansei, a Nissan subsidiary, announced Tuesday that the company is expanding its plants in Shelbyville, Lewisburg and Smyrna to create a total of 1,200 new jobs.
Calsonic currently employs more than 2,100 people, and produces auto products such as automotive climate control, electronics, cooling and exhaust systems. It also assembles Nisssan vehicles.
Meanwhile, Alcoa’s Tennesse Operations broke ground Thursday on a $275 million expansion to meet the growing demand for aluminum in the auto industry. Aluminum is already the second most-used material in vehicle manufacturing, and it is expected to nearly double in use by 2025. The expansion will create 200 full-time jobs once completed in 2015 and the construction of the product will create another 400 temporary jobs.
