July 19, 2011 — The Collision Industry Conference (CIC) Data Privacy Committee recently introduced two surveys to evaluate industry concerns about the privacy of estimating and management system data.
The surveys are meant to help the committee examine where data is going, how it is protected, and where data has possibly been leaked inappropriately. The committee plans to roll out the surveys at the CIC meeting July 21 in Salt Lake City, but they are available online now.
“The possible unauthorized usage of the data we generate using collision estimating and management systems is a major concern of many within the industry,” said Tony Passwater, chairman of the Data Privacy Committee. “Not only is the vehicle owner affected, but the concerns are also echoed by repairers and insurance company representatives.”
Providers of products and services to the collision repair industry who are capturing, storing, or transmitting data from computerized estimating and management systems are encouraged to take the first survey. The second survey was made for anyone with first-hand knowledge of cases in which specific repair information was reported outside internal usage unexpectedly, or without authorization.
