Auto Sales Could Top 16 Million in 2013

July 3, 2013—Detroit automakers reported strong sales gains in June 2013, compared to June of last year.

Ford reported a 13 percent gain, while Chrysler said sales were up 8 percent and General Motors (GM) said sales were up 6 percent.

Sales of Ford’s F-Series were up 24 percent, while Chrysler’s Ram truck were up 23 percent. GM’s Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks also posted sales gains of 29 percent and 33 percent, respectively.

Overall, automakers reported total sales of 1.4 million vehicles in June for the U.S., a 9 percent increase from a year ago.

According to Edmunds.com, new vehicles sold at an annualized rate of 15.96 million.

Ford also said that if the strong sales continued, the industry could reach the 16-million sales mark for the first time since 2007.

Kelly Blue book reported that the estimated average transaction price for light vehicles was up by 1 percent in June, and said that the month’s biggest winners are Nissan and Ford.

Nissan sales were up 12.9 percent to 104,124.
