August 2, 2010—After less than one week of its dealers taking special orders for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, General Motors (GM) announced its plans to increase the electric car’s production by 50 percent—from 30,000 to 45,000 unit—in 2012.
The production increase is due to strong public interest and was announced during President Barack Obama’s visit to the Detroit-Hamtramck plant, where the Volt is now being manufactured for sale later this year. The Volt is the world’s first extended-range capable vehicle, can travel up to 340 miles on one tank of gas and is powered by electricity at all times, according to a GM press release_notes.
