80% of vehicles in need of maintenance

April 1, 2010

April 1, 2010—April is National Car Care Month (NCCM), and it’s a good time to remind customers that eight out of 10 vehicles fail at least one component of the vehicle inspection process, according to the Car Care Council.

“Each year, community car care events routinely identify that consumers are not taking proper care of their vehicles,” said Rich White, Car Care Council executive director. “These results show there is a huge opportunity for shops and stores to increase DIFM and DIY business.”

Many auto repair shops and parts stores celebrate NCCM by offering special discounts on parts and service, handing out free Car Care Guides and hosting community car care events in the community, according to the Car Care Council. Businesses volunteer their time to check components on vehicles—including tires, air filters, lubricants and fluids, belts and hoses, battery cables and lights.

The Car Care Council reports that one out of 10 vehicles checked in 2009 had an illuminated “Check Engine” light, 27 percent had low, overfull or dirty engine oil, 26 percent had leaky or dirty coolant in the radiator, and 51 percent of belts were unsatisfactory.

“Community car care events educate consumers on how much of their vehicle’s maintenance is going unchecked,” White said. “These popular events build awareness of your business and increase car counts and store traffic.”
