Jan. 21, 2010

Jan. 21, 2010--Data from GPS users release_notesd by TomTom, a provider of navigation products and digital maps, revealed that U.S. drivers tend to stay within the speed limit range on most U.S. highways.

Data show that Mississippi has the fastest roads, with average speeds slightly faster than 70 miles per hour, and posted speed limits ranging from 65 to 70 mph, according to TomTom.

The top five fastest states also include New Mexico, Idaho, Utah and Alabama, all which average speeds of 70 mph. Speed limits in these states range from 60 to 75 mph, according to TomTom.

The fastest road in the United States is Interstate 15 in Utah and Nevada, where speeds average more than 77 mph.

The speed data have revealed Washington D.C. as the slowest area of the United States, with average interstate highway speeds of 46 mph. Hawaii (53 mph) and Delaware (61 mph) round out the list of slow spots.

The results were calculated using data from Speed Profiles, the historical speed database from TomTom’s business unit, Tele Atlas. Speed Profiles' database covers 85,000 miles of U.S. interstate highways, and combines actual speeds that millions of GPS-enabled drivers have traveled over the last two years to provide a view of historic speeds.
