Dec. 22, 2011—The Right to Repair Coalition recently announced that its initiative will appear on the 2012 Massachusetts ballot.
The Secretary of State’s office confirmed that 83,180 signatures have been approved from each region of the state, more than the 68,000 signatures that were needed.
The Legislature now has until May to approve it. If the Legislature doesn’t act on this, 11,485 more signatures are needed to appear on the 2012 statewide ballot. Right to Repair promises to save drivers money by mandating that car companies provide non-proprietary repair information to vehicle owners or preferred technicians.
“We are thrilled that this consumer legislation is now officially on the 2012 ballot,” said Art Kinsman of the Massachusetts Right to Repair Coalition. “For the first time, consumers will actually have options when it comes to car repairs, and those options will be more affordable.”
“It’s time to level the playing field and keep the big automobile manufacturers and their dealerships from dictating where consumers go for car repairs,” Kinsman said.
