September 3, 2019—WalletHub has released its report on 2019’s Best & Worst Cities to Drive In, putting Detroit at the top of the list.
Factors for the list include average gas prices, annual hours in traffic congestion per auto commuter to auto repair shops per capita, among others.
The list of the worst cities includes:
- Honolulu, Hawaii
- New York City
- Los Angeles
- Seattle
- Washington, D.C.
- Newark, N.J.
- San Francisco
- Philadelphia
- Oakland, Calif.
- Detroit
The report also showed the best cities to drive in, which included:
- Raleigh, N.C.
- Orlando, Fla.
- Lincoln, Neb.
- Tampa, Fla.
- Winston-Salem, N.C.
- Birmingham, Ala.
- Corpus Christi, Texas
- Boise, Idaho
- Charlotte, N.C.
- Greensboro, N.C.
The report found that Honolulu came first as the highest for auto maintenance costs, while Jacksonville, Fla. was shown as the cheapest. And the most auto repair shops per capita were found in Las Vegas and the least in Boston.
The report also found that Winston-Salem, N.C. and Fort Wayne, Ind. residents spend the fewest annual hours in traffic congestion per auto commuter, coming out to only 9 hours annually. This is 18.2 times fewer than Boston, where residents spend the most at 164 hours.
For car thefts, Gilbert, Ariz. had the fewest per 1,000 residents (0.56). That number was 24.4 times fewer than Alburquerque, N.M. (13.69 car thefts).
