Survey: Distracted Driving a Widespread Issue

June 4, 2019—Arity recently released a thorough study of distracted driving, and the findings indicated that it remains a widespread issue.

In a survey of those with driver's licenses, the findings indicated that, since 2018, drivers feel less confident in their ability to deal with distractions. What's more, nearly all drivers consider phone usage to be inexcusable ... nevertheless, almost all of the survey's respondents admitted to using their phone while driving.

Meanwhile, discounts on insurance premiums was found to be the top motivation for drivers to be safer on the road.

Among the survey's other noteworthy findings:

  • Seatbelt use is strong, with 93 percent of respondents indicating that they always wear their seatbelt.
  • Drivers claim to be in a distracted mental state one-sixth of the time while driving.
  • Among the activities that drivers get distracted by: watching videos, texting, reading, and sending emails.
  • Nearly 97 percent of young adults acknowledged that they often use their phone while driving.
  • 43 percent of respondents also admitted they don't know distracted driving laws.
  • 58 percent of drivers are unaware of the impacts distracted driving has on their insurance.
