CORUS endorses Safe Roads for America Act

Dec. 7, 2011

Dec. 7, 2011— The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) recently announced that the Coalition for Older Roadway User Safety (CORUS) has endorsed the Safe Roads for America Act.

The Safe Roads for America Act, which was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Reps. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) and Lou Barletta (R-Pa.), is focused on making America's roads safer for older drivers and pedestrians. The Act specifically addresses a need for upgrades to U.S. road signs.

"As our population ages, we need to make our road signs more readable at night," Johnson said. "Someone 60 years old needs 10 times the amount of light to see at night [compared to] someone who is 19, according to the American Automobile Association. Safe Roads helps make our roads safer by ensuring seniors and everyone can see road signs more clearly at night."

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, roughly 25 percent of American drivers will be 65 or older by 2030. Brighter signs with higher levels of retro-reflectivity will improve older drivers’ ability to navigate roads and drive more safely.

Joe Jeffrey, chairman of the ATSSA, said the Safe Roads for America Act will help reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries nationwide.

The Safe Roads for America Act extends current sign upgrade deadlines, and allows for a more streamlined source of federal funding to assist state and local governments with meeting these safety needs, according to the ATSSA.

CORUS is an organization focused on roadway safety for aging drivers. CORUS is comprised of the following entities: the AARP, American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), American Highway Users Alliance, Easter Seals, National Association of Area Agencies on Aging, and Transportation for America.
