OEM Parts' Effect on Profitability

With the OEM-aftermarket part debate recently resparked by legislation in Rhode Island, FenderBender decided to look at its 2018 FenderBender Industry Survey to see how OEM part use affects profitability.

After a parts bill that restricted aftermarket parts use was passed in Rhode Island, the OEM vs. aftermarket part debate was reignited. Various sides made their arguments, from automakers claiming aftermarket parts would compromise OEM repair procedures to the Automotive Body Parts Association claiming the bill would give OEMs a monopoly on parts sales.

But moving past the broader debate: What does it mean for shops to use more OEM parts than aftermarket parts? Does it affect the bottom line? According to the FenderBender Industry Survey, it does. Here’s a breakdown:
