August 29, 2018—The 14th Allstate America's Best Drivers Report Annual, published today, named Brownsville, Texas, the city with the safest drivers in the United States.
Based on the Allstate claims data, the report highlights safe driving before the long weekend for Labor Day, the date on which many people travel and, therefore, a particularly fatal period on the road , according to Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
Published every year, the America's Best Drivers Report ranks the 200 largest cities in the United States based on the frequency of collisions. To celebrate the cities that lead the classification and encourage them to serve as an example for other communities across the country, this year's report uses an unexpected group to spread the message of safe driving: youth and adolescents, many of whom can not drive yet.
Keeping roads in the United States safe is a particularly important cause for young people, for whom car accidents are one of the leading causes of death. In an effort to educate communities about this problem, this year Allstate helps cities with the lowest ranking: Baltimore (ranked 200) and Los Angeles (post 194).
According to the Allstate claims data, the average driver is involved in a collision roughly every 10 years. In Brownsville, which leads the ranking, this figure improved by 26 percent, with the average of a collision every 13.6 years.
Other highlights of the 2018 report include Miami as the city that has improved the most driving, climbing 37 positions in the report. It also includes Spokane, Wash., which dropped 37 positions compared to last year's ranking after a 12-position drop the previous year.
For the fourth consecutive year, Allstate's America's Best Drivers Report also analyzed the correlation between collisions and sudden braking in more than 100 cities, using data collected by Drivewise, the Allstate telematics programs that personalize the auto insurance experience by providing feedback about driving in real time and then rewarding safe driving with money.
According to the data from Drivewise, the average American driver will brake abruptly 19 times for every 1,000 miles driven. Drivers in cities with fewer sudden braking events per 1,000 miles tend to have fewer claims for damage to car ownership.
